Record Store Day '19

What's up, Internet.

Hey, check out this record I didn't buy today. . .
You know, all I really wanted to do today was head over to Radio Wasteland for Record Store Day.  That's it, nothing crazy.  I wasn't even planning on waking up at the ass-crack of dawn like I did last year, either:  compared to the 2018 release list, the offerings in 2019 were pretty lame.  A couple items that raised an eyebrow, but the only one I was really interested in was a limited release of B-Sides and alternate takes by Weezer from their Blue Album era.

That's about it.

Nevertheless, it's a hell of a lot of fun to putz around in a record store day, and since it's Record Store Day and everything, I figured it was a fitting way to spend one's morning and afternoon.

Buuuuut, Kris' van had other plans.

Emptying out Kris' old 2007 Chevy Uplander. . .
Over the course of the last couple weeks, her minivan - that she's owned since 2009, if you'll be so good to recall - started making strange noises.  Rattles, whistles, you name it.  It would come and go, too, and would vary in intensity and volume depending on the day.  Eventually, she took it in and had it looked at, and, long story short, she needed to have several things replaced and/or repaired.  We're talking upwards of $1,000.  On a twelve-year-old van.

So we had to face the music.  Was it better to a.) dump a couple grand into the Uplander, that we don't owe anything on and have been making zero payments on for almost a decade, in the hopes of getting it to last another couple years, or b.) sell the Uplander while it was still worth something, and use the trade-in value and some of our money in savings as a down payment towards a new van.

We decided to go with B.

Alayna says farewell to the Tactical Family Transport Vehicle. . .

(Was a bit windy out.  And we had to take a break from our time at the dealership to pick her up from a sleepover birthday party, hence the unkempt appearance.)
2016 Chrysler Town and Country
Our good friend Morgan works over Midland City Ford, and had promising to hook us up whenever we needed a new vehicle.  We knew he'd give us a an optimal deal on a new vehicle, and were therefore determined to buy through his dealership.  For a week or so, we perused their website, keeping tabs on all the new and incoming minivans they had in stock.  Eventually, we came across a black 2016 Chrysler Town and Country with only 50,000 miles on it at a reasonable price, and decided to go in today to check it out.

Unfortunately, we ran into a few snags.  First of all, Morgan had the day off, so he wouldn't be in to help us out.  Secondly, the van had two viewings (where potential customers make a scheduled appointment to come in and check out the vehicle) for the day - one in the morning, one around noon.  If the van was truly the catch it appeared to be, we were convinced it wouldn't be around long enough for us to have an opportunity to check it out.  Someone would pounce on it.

We did have a few cards up our sleeve, however.  Morgan, who's an assistant sales manager at the dealership, hooked us up with a trusted salesman who he knew well that would take care of us.  He was also able to get this salesmen to squeeze us in between the two viewing appointments, and even went so far as to have the salesman deter the first customers away from the van in question.  This ultimately proved unnecessary, though: the first couple that looked at the van decided against it because they wanted a minivan with heated seats.

Seriously.

Kris takes the Town and Country for a test drive. . .
We rolled in around 9:30am and met up with the salesman, who showed us the van and went over the fine print with us.  The Town and Country was only two years old and looked brand new, and looked very similar to an older model that we had picked up as a rental when we flew home for Christmas of 2011.

Kris crunches some numbers while waiting for our salesman to return.
Following a test drive and a review of the vehicle's service record, we decided to pull the trigger on it.  We spent the next couple hours negotiating the price of the vehicle down to a few grand below the original asking price, with about $2,000 for our trade-in (R.I.P. Chevy Uplander) and a new set of high-end tires thrown in (the tread on the Town and Country were at about 60%, so we negotiated for nicer ones.)  The entire duration of this back-and-forth negotiating had Morgan texting me, his sales rep, and their boss repeatedly, making the deal as beneficial as possible to everyone.  We're extremely grateful he was able to win us the deal on this that he was - saved us the hassle of having to deal with sleazy salesmen or other dealership theatrics.

Happy wife, happy life.
The Cannonball was pretty excited to get a new car, too.  As can be seen here.
One of the van's features that Kris completely goes ape-shit for is the fold-down seats, which allows for a ridiculous amount of storage room (summer camping trips comes to find, for sure.)  With the back row seats upright, the truck space is nearly triple what we had in the last van (because it opens up below into a sub-floor compartment as well. . . which will come in handy on weekly grocery trips, or whatever the hell Kris does with her van on a weekly basis, I don't know.
Kris and her new ride

So, on what should have been a pretty bitchin' Saturday for Yours Truly, spending a few hours digging through stacks of records and scoring a few treasures, Kris bought herself a nearly-new, top-of-the-line minivan.  The irony in all of this, of course, it that it was me that was supposed to be getting a new car next - we've been snowballing money into our savings account so that I could buy a new car out of pocket (my car being even older than the Uplander, and handling far worse in the snow.)

And now that we pulled a chunk of change out of savings to put the down payment on Kris' new van, we're going to have to make up all that lost ground, and my new car will have to recede further into the distance.

Being an adult sucks.

Halloween 2011, Pt. II: Trunk or Treat

America's Favourite Family
Happy Pre-Halloween, fellas!

I generally loathe Sundays.  Sure, I get to technically 'sleep in' a little, but when you have kids, that more or less means 6:30am instead of 5:30am.  Still not awesome.  Following Sunday's extra hour or so of sleep, Yours Truly generally has to devote the rest of the morning, afternoon, and evening to yard work and lesson planning for the upcoming school week.  And that's it.

LOADS of fun.

Well, today was no different - I still had a crap-load of work to take care of throughout the earlier part of the day.  However, since this is a holiday weekend and all, I had to make time for an evening activity with the Fam:

Trunk or Treating.

Yes, you heard that correctly, folks - no typo.  Trunk or treat.  Kris volunteered us through her church (Peace United Methodist of Hunter's Creek).  We ended up taking Alayna there a few years ago (remember?), but didn't go last year because Halloween itself fell on a Sunday.  So this year, we're hitting it up again... and this year, we're actively participating in it.

The Cannonball decorates the back of Kris' Uplander...
Basically, a dozen or so cars, trucks, and vans all pop their trunks and decorate them up in some random Halloween motif.  They then proceed to pass out candy from the trunks of their cars... which, as I'm led to believe, is something that was once frowned upon by the majority of society.  I was taught at a young age to avoid taking candy from strangers in cars, but I guess the times are-a changin'.

'Tis the season.

Anyway, here's a ton of pics for you (sorry, no video - I used my Sony instead of my cell phone.  My apologies).  Enjoy:

Hough Ladies
Junk in several trunks.
Scouring for goods...
We didn't really have a theme going into this thing, so we just kinda grabbed a bunch of random stuff lying around the house....
...So the next thing you know, we ended up having this haunted dungeon-looking set-up.  Got a lot of compliments on it, though...
Having a blast...
Abby looks wasted here... I don't think she was, though.
Abby barking orders at someone...
Abby is introduced to Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin...
Plunder!
Abby, loving life.
Our kids hung out in the van a good deal of the time, watching She-Ra on the DVD player...
Dungeon Masters
Trick/Trunk or Treating
Dinner
I'm just hot enough to pull this off.

HotWheels

well readers, after a long, long scavenger hunt through the bowels of central florida car dealerships, the houghs finally picked themselves up a (sort of) new car.

me, i already have a car. it may look like a clown car, but it gets me from point A to point B with only a smidget of gasoline. nay, this new additional to our automotive fleet is for kristina, who has driven the same 1998 chevy malibu since the cretaceous period.

so yesterday - after following after several possible vehicles and getting her hopes up more than she would've liked, the mrs. finally found a horseless carriage to her liking: a 2007 chevy uplander (yes, much like the one we told you about before), with 39,000 miles and enough space to pack in a whole litter of hobbit-footed hough sprouts.

i was a little bummed the damn thing didn't have a DVD player in the ceiling like the last uplander did, nor missiles that flipped out from the sides
when Cobra draws near... but the interior is a lot nicer than some of the other vehicles we had smurfed out (with the exception of a couple tears in the upholstery in one of the middle seats). but, as we're reaching that time of year when we can no longer rely on one vehicle to get ourselves to work each morning, we had to forego that elusive dream car and pick up something that was 'very good' instead of 'excellent.'

so there you have it. we bought a new used car. all we need now are some bitchin' flame decals down the side and a couple yosemite sam mud flaps for the tires and we're ready to rock and roll.

vrrrooooommm,

Vans, Firewire, Scrapes and Tooths

fans, let me tell you this much right off the bat: the last 48 hours have been crappy as all hell.

allow me to explain...

about a week ago, the brakes went out in kris' chevy malibu... and no, not in a wacky, '80s movie style, either. no rockin' tunes in the background, no hilarious close-calls or teenagers screaming at the top of their lungs. nay, dear readers, instead it was the really, really expensive style of brake failure: after nine plus years of diligent service, the malibu's brake line had completed rusted out. too many michigan winters and tropical what-have-you - it was finally time to tie ol' yellar to the tree outback (so to speak). seeing as the houghs are somewhat of a procrastinating lot, we let the malibu sit in the drive for about a week before we realized, "oh crap, brian has to go back to work soon, and kris will need her own car to take the kid to daycare, go to work, tackle chick stuff, etc." so now we get to deal with it.

cowabunga.

and so, over the course of the last 48 hours, we have scoured central florida looking for a new car ('new' in the sense that we had not previously owned the vehicle ourselves, mind you). it has been a trying, trying ordeal, and i am officially 'funned out' with the whole affair in general. i have seen more sleazy car salesmen in the last two days to last a life time (four salesmen = one lifetime in my book). as this is kris' car, i'm pretty much offering my two cents on what vehicles to consider, but, as the 'pretty nice guy' that i am, letting her make the final call. she tends to look at things like 'safety ratings' and 'existing warranties,' while i tend to look for 'mp3 CD option' and 'leather interior.'

to each their own. she's checking out a van tomorrow morning, so hopefully the accursed 2009 new car fiasco will have run its course by sundown tomorrow. we'll see.

in other news, the cannonball sprouted her first tooth this afternoon. huzzah. her bottom right-center one. 'big whoop,' you might say, but this kid's fourteen months old. sure, she can gum her way through a tin can easily enough, but we've nevertheless been kinda holding out for that whole 'teeth' thing. now that its here, i'm a little more at ease. toothless chicks worry me.

in yet other news, i've been having difficulty with my new MacBook Pro: the firewire drive on it is 800 (as are all new Mac models), but all the old external hard drives i own are 400. i bought a converter so i can, oh, listen to music and upload my photo libraries onto the stupid thing, but the piece of crap doesn't even work. this means, dear readers, that i have to a.) return some piece of garbage to amazon and suck up the shipping cost, and b.) venture forth into the local shopping mall and head into the neighborhood nerd mecca (i.e. apple store) and have a few geeks take a gander at my compatibility problem... which should be loads of fun.

my biggest issue with this, of course, is that every damn time i walk into an apple store and talk to one of their 'techs,' i feel like a caveman... which is absolutely ridiculous, because i somewhat know what i'm talking about when it comes to computers. more than likely, i think its not my supposed 'normie' status that's in question, but instead the people that work at these apple stores. they are completely insane. they spend way too much time sitting in front of a screen and not nearly enough time enjoying the world of good ol' fashioned analog (books, records, trees, and people).

lastly, i began moving all my crap back into my classroom today (fun), and, at high noon in the hottest month of the year down here in florida, i had my ass handed to me. moving furniture across campus, slinging around cardboard boxes full of worn-out textbooks, and stacking chairs in 100 degree heat is hell on earth, folks. i've got more exposed wounds on me right now than i did when i was taking that controversial malaria medication my first year in africa. every muscle in my body (both of them) ache, and i seriously feel like i've been in a car accident.

in conclusion, i am totally looking forward to tomorrow (not). three grad school papers due, a new car (er, van) fiasco to figure out, hours and hours of more classroom muscle work in this horrible, humid august heat, and a computer problem that can only be remedied with the help of a crack team of elitest iNerds.

man, you are straight up jealous of my life, aren't you...

sad,

- brian
